About Us

Finding Inspiration in nature.

WombleWitch Crafts is a small rural business based in beautiful Upper Teesdale, County Durham. I make handwoven willow crafts for the home and garden plus I sell craft kits and run willow weaving workshops locally. Im keen to inspire others to learn this ancient and useful craft.

My Story

I started my crafting journey over 30 years ago, at that time I didn't have spare money to buy craft supplies but I had a real passion to create. I started by creating with materials that were free, such as paper mache pulp made from old newspaper and with this i made a selection of bowls, plaques and sculptures. I decoupaged old furniture with recycled colourful paper, collected old wood and metal and created decorative household items.

I recycled shapely plastic bottles into decorative lamp bases, the list goes on but I think by now you've got the idea. I love to create using things I find in nature and recycling items that are discarded. From this comes the first part of my business name ... Womble.

The Wombles were one of my favourite TV programs as a child, cute creatures collecting and making things from the discarded items they found on Wimbledon Common. The original upcyclers before it became trendy.

I also like to make herbal tinctures and display my many nature finds which has resulted in me being called a witch, jokingly on numerous occasions, plus I was born on Halloween so I must be! :}

I would say WombleWitch describes me perfectly although possibly confusing to many when they first hear it.

My willow weaving journey started 9 years ago, fascinated by this ancient craft I read books and watched numerous videos on weaving techniques. Once I mastered the basic weaves and how to soak and mellow the willow correctly I was hooked. The repetitive motion of weaving is very therapeutic and calming. Working with a beautiful natural material with all its subtle colour variations is a joy. I now, 9 years later have turned something that started as a hobby into an exciting new business.

I'm keen to encourage others to learn this craft, seeing the proud looks on the faces of family and friends when they have made their first willow item is joyful to me.

I know they'll be many people out there who would like to try this craft and for those who live locally in the County Durham area, you can book one of my in person courses.  For people who live further away or would like an unusual gift Idea, I have created a variety of craft kits with full instructions suitable for beginners.

If you would like to say hi and see my willow creations, I have a regular stall at the Middleton in Teesdale Farmers / Indie Market which is held on the 4th Saturday of each month.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story

Best wishes
